About this site
"Peering over the edge with open disregard" is a blog made from a recipe of:
- 1 part open source, open content, open business; open, community focused everything
- 1 part interesting technologies
- 1 part education mixed thoroughly with the first two ingredients
Of course, like all good recipe's it'll change from time to time, the mix of ingredients will vary, and I'll experiment with additional topics and season to taste.
The tag line "Peering over the edge with open disregard" is an observation about where I tend to focus my passion & energy. Where you'd define the 'edge' is relative, of course but I'm generally pretty close to it and enjoy contemplating what's not readily visible. 'open disregard' is just a recognition of the risks of standing so close to the edge. I know that a lot of what I'm doing today will seem silly and obsolete in a year or two and yet I don't care because 'the edge' is where we learn and explore... and for me, it's the most exciting way to learn.
About Me
I have a wonderful wife (Sara) and two amazing little girls (Anna and Maria). We have 3 dogs (Jula and Mona are Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and Laz is ... well we're not sure what Laz is but she's a great dog), and a cat named Gabo.
Some of you might have caught the Simpsons references in the pet names (my wife wouldn't let me name the kids after Simpsons characters), the rest of you need to watch more Simpsons.
I'm the President of The rSmart Group, a commercial open source software company focused on education.
I also serve on several education-focused open source boards where I'm helping to create and evolve a new model dubbed Community Source for developing and sustaining software in education:
The Kuali Foundation, Founder
Director, Financial System Board
Director, Student System Board
